Yesterday as I was searching around YouTube, admiring the works of Ross D. Martin, MD, MHA, FACMI and his clever HITECH: An Interoperetta in Three Acts and The Meaningful Yoose Rap, when I stumbled upon a video titled “If Air Travel Worked Like Health Care.”
I hadn’t seen this particular video before, however, I am very familiar with the comparison commonly made between the health care industry and the travel industry (and the similar health care and financial industry comparison).
The video, based on a highly recognized article by Jonathan Rauch of the National Journal, makes a great point: Should the consumer be responsible for the purchase and planning of a trip, when in fact “consumers do not understand flight plans and landing slots?”
If this video accomplishes anything, it serves as a great reminder of the work we have cut out for us in health care and health IT. Although comedic and horrific, this video is equally inspirational for those people focused on fixing the problem of health care in the United States.
As a health care professional, what are your plans for the future of health care? As it looks now, we better get moving… otherwise we will all be “grounded” in the years to come.
