“My Friend Maia” is a beautiful capture of a healthy life well-lived. I revisit this short film on Vimeo often as inspiration. It is a visual reminder for me to stick to habits that will support a long and healthy life.
Shot in Fire Island, New York, this short 4-minute film captures the secrets of eternal youth as Maia Helles, a Russian ballet dancer turns 95, but still remains resolutely independent, healthy and as fit as a forty year old. The film was made by artist and film maker Julia Warr, who became utterly convinced by the benefits of the daily exercise routine, which Maia perfected, together with her Mother, over 60 years ago, long before exercise classes were ever invented. I was inspired to share this wonderful example of healthy living on Twitter for GE Healthcare’s #GetFit Cancer Prevention Campaign. #GetFit encourages sharing healthy habits using the #GetFit hashtag via social media and an app.
The campaign, running thru the end of June, focuses on three global challenges: Move Your Body, Eat Healthy, and Own Your Health. Participants are encouraged to adopt and share healthy habits that can help reduce the likelihood of developing cancer, and are motivated by others through social channels and a leaderboard.
CURATING FOR WELLNESS
I have previously written about the value of starting tiny habits, and the slew of apps that share fitness progress as part of the Quantified Self movement, but the #GetFit campaign also got me thinking about wellness curation.
People share their exercise progress or pictures of a healthy meal, but I thought – why not also curate and share my favorite healthy resources for others to enjoy? I knew people would love the film about Maia, so it became the first item on my #GetFit Inspiration list – a list of the best ideas for healthy habits that I have discovered, adopted or am trying to incorporate.
My list already includes the benefits of starting the day with warm water and lemon, my favorite uber healthy Magical Breakfast Cream, the health benefits of walking on the beach, and my favorite deep rest meditation for going to sleep.
Adding to this list, and posting daily, has helped me stick to more of these healthy habits.
#GetFit is a wellness and prevention initiative, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society, that wants to engage a global community in adopting healthy habits.
Recent research by McCann Truth Central involving 7,000 responses from people living in the U.S., U.K., Brazil, China, South Africa, Turkey and Japan, showed that 74 percent of consumers believe that the importance of wellness is only going to increase as time goes on. Wellness is now seen as being more holistic. The report also shows that the majority of people (57 percent) want support in their healthy living goals.
Globally, the biggest fear of respondents was that cancer would end their life.
HASHTAGS FOR HEALTH DISCOVERY
The importance of hashtags as a way to organize and discover information continues to grow, especially in healthcare. It is on trend that the #GetFit campaign is organized around a hashtag.
Although hashtags started on Twitter, they are now popular across many platforms. This week, Facebook announced it would finally be adding clickable hashtags to aid its content discovery and search. A tool to see the whole picture for a hashtag, including: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, App.net, Vine and Google+, is Tagboard (although data is only available going back 7 days.)
It would be interesting to mine the #GetFit data to see which healthy habits people are more likely to share, who is sharing, what tools they are using, and identify the healthy habits people have an easier time adopting.
The amazing thing about technology is that it gives us the ability to save and share many things all over the world. Even though Maia’s fitness regimen is old school, it is being shared and preserved via today’s technology – giving its proven wisdom a long life.
