During this week’s #HITsm chat (Aug. 8), we will focus on design of applications in healthcare. Our social media chats have engaged two communities in sharing insights and working to determine how to design more patient-friendly applications. The two communities are #HCLDR (Health Care Leader) and #HITsm (Health IT Social Media). The HCLDR moderator, Colin Hung wrote a thoughtful article that perfectly sets the stage for this cross-community conversation. Part 1 of this week’s chat – the #hcldr portion – was held Tuesday night. I encourage you to look through some of the chat’s top tweets to get an idea of what was discussed.
As we continue the second half of our conversation, there are a few added resources to read through. The Business Innovation Factory does work in healthcare with the goal of designing workflows that are more human centered. Angela Dunn highlighted their work in an earlier post entitled “Human Centered Design for New Models of Wellness and Innovation.” Human-centered design and Patient-design thinking are similar. The Slideshare presentation embedded below delivers a snapshot of the key principles.
Another well-timed article appeared in Wired, Beyond UX: Best Practices for Medical App Development. The article highlighted 10 guiding ideas on how to develop in a more patient-friendly and applicable way:
- Understand the healthcare system
- Don’t rely on user expertise
- Value chain approach
- Onboard subject matter experts
- Leverage design thinking principles
- Embed the app in research
- Get into the trenches
- Test the prototype
- Data and processes first, then logic
As Mithun Sridharan discusses in the article:
“To really understand stakeholder psychology, the app developer should entrench themselves in the patient’s and physician’s world.”
Design thinking isn’t new in healthcare yet it is not fully embraced in how vendors and developers approach the healthcare and patient app challenge. Mayo Innovation pushes the envelope in this arena and more need to jump into this approach.
The key points are:
- Drop your preconceived notions
- Get out with patients (your users) and see how they do what they do
- Build a minimal viable product and get feedback
- Iterate, Iterate, Iterate
- Refine, Engage, Refine, Engage, Deliver
