What trends do you see among health IT startups?
I see hundreds of healthcare startups every year, many in the health IT space. There remains a lot of excitement in wearables and on the data collection side, but it all ties back to the ownership and control of our personal health data. Startups have taken note and I see many interesting business models aimed at giving consumers access to their data. With all the data collection, there is a big push to utilize these data assets. Integrating genomics and incorporating predictive modeling in the handling of patient care are hot topics. The marriage of these data sets to EHR systems is inevitable as we hope to extrude ever more information and gain predictive and actionable insights. Protecting healthcare data remains a strong concern, and businesses are developing more solutions around authentication, data security, and safe, dedicated cloud storage. Telemedicine in all its variants continues its growth, especially in the self-insured/high deductible market.
Exciting times to be in health IT!
