Question from Rob Brull, product manager at Corepoint Health:
In what ways does it make sense to extend Direct Project beyond those already defined by Meaningful Use?
Most of the implementations I am aware of for Direct protocol involve the sending and receiving of Summary of Care documents to satisfy the Transfer of Care (ToC) requirement for Meaningful Use. There is one radiology site my company is working with to send a Diagnostic Imaging Report via Direct. My thought is that lab orders, lab results, and radiology reports are obvious workflows for implementing the Direct protocol. No VPN or agent is required and hopefully all provider facilities will already have a Direct address based on ToC requirements. The real hurdle will be for vendors to extend their capabilities to send and receive payloads other than Summary of Care.
