Recent campaigns have focused on exploiting existing HIPAA provisions and the view, download, and transmit (VDT) objectives of Meaningful Use Stage 2 to enable patient empowerment. These are undoubtedly huge steps forward in the right direction, and having the ability to self manage and distribute data at will is trivially important. However, should self-management be the consumer’s long term goal? There will always be use cases where self-management is necessary and useful, but there are better ways to enable data access and liquidity without having to put the onus on the patient.
